Bodacious Books and Baubles
Bodacious Books and Baubles is a proud advocate for independently published authors. I have sent out the following question to the authors featured in the store; What does being an indie author mean to you? Below you will find some of their answers.
For me, being an indie is incredible. It's boatloads of work-don't think for a second that it's an easy thing. I'm not simply an author. I am a promoter, beta reader, graphic designer, and marketer. I am the President of my own brand. Being an indie has allowed me to be home more, use my creativity more and meet so many amazing new people that I can't imagine going back to a straight 9-5 cubicle job. It just wouldn't cut it anymore.
I'm constantly surprised and in awe of readers reaching out and telling me that they love my books. It's a completely surreal thing. I'm just normal me from Maine. I've made fantastic life-long friends and met super fans at signings. I get to travel. I get to write. I get to dream and I get to pay my bills and be home to get my daughter on and off the bus. That is the best feeling. It's provided me the freedom to explore my own life and self and act on those findings! How many people can say that?!
Writing was something I've always been good at but never thought I'd turn it into a career or lifestyle or moneymaker and here I am three years later doing just that and feeling fulfilled.
Being an Indie author for me, means wearing several hats. I'm not only the writer, I'm the editor, the publisher, the publicist, the sales manager, the accountant, and on and on. Not that I'm complaining. I actually enjoy having my hands on every aspect of my brand. It's important for me to embrace everything that I do regarding being an Indie author because I've waited a long time to begin working on my passion. I love what I'm doing and enjoy meeting fellow authors and wonderful readers. I'm having fun doing something that I truly love.
If you asked me this question years ago, I'd probably tell you that it's great to be able to publish what you want and when you want it. Most writers don't like to be censored because it goes against their creative nature. But my thoughts today are very different. An indie author has a lot of fun! I enjoy collaborating with cover artists and editors, I like researching for my marketing plans and working with social media venues when I need that extra ad push, but the best thing of all is that people who enjoy my books can contact me on a more intimate level. I really LOVE corresponding with fans via emails, as well as, meeting them in person at signings. Some of my dearest friends from around the world started off as a "fan".
To me being an indie author means freedom. Freedom of expression. Freedom to be myself. Freedom to let the story take me in places that go outside the box and aren't mainstream. It means letting my unique voice be heard over the crowd and enjoying the journey without the weight of a deadline on my shoulders. It means control...of me, my books, and my out reach. For me being an indie author allows me to do what I love, exactly the way I love to do it.
